TEA: A British Coping Mechanism
Life is as simple as a cup of tea — a morning wake-up call.
If forgotten, it goes cold, losing all appeal and flavour. Dismissed on a windowsill or left lonely on a desk, it stains the worktops but heals the soul.
This work was made during a time when we were all forced indoors. Life for everyone became an endless cycle of repetition as we looked daily to the tragic headlines that swamped our lives for months. During this time, as many did, I reached out to those closest to me, asking them to send me an image of their morning beverage, their daily ritual. It’s these rituals — the act of putting the kettle on — that united us for so long.
This work serves as a reminder of the days we looked on in hope together, as we put our livelihoods — our futures — in the hands of those in power. A reminder of how we cope during times of heightened stress and powerlessness. Cup of tea, anyone?
